Editor’s note: The following is the fifth profile in a series of articles about startup founders from non-technical backgrounds who have launched successful venture-backed companies. Read the previous interviews with MagicSchool AI founder Adeel Khan here, Trunk Tools founder Sarah Buchner here, Tabs founder Ali Hussain here, and Craft founder Ilya Levtov here. When an executive at Replit suggested that Cecilia Ziniti seemed distracted by artificial intelligence, she was not an engineer working on the coding startup’s AI products. She was its general counsel. The executive told her ‘You’re a great GC and good at business development … but it…

It’s one of those days where “rates this week” headlines and “rates today” headlines are going to diverge. Most “rates this week” headlines are focused on Freddie Mac’s weekly survey, which comes out on Thursdays. Yesterday, that survey’s average rate hit its highest point since July 2025 — 6.71%. Daily’s a different story, and it’s one where rates fell a bit. The average interest rate on a 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage ticked down to 6.69% APR, according to rates provided to NerdWallet by Zillow. This is four basis points lower than yesterday but 16 basis points higher than a week ago.…

Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson has blamed flight price rises on “foolish leaders” starting wars, in a thinly veiled reference to the US-Israel conflict with Iran.Middle East tensions have choked the production and transportation of millions of barrels of oil, causing a surge in the price of car and jet fuels, which are made from oil.In May, Virgin Atlantic added a fuel surcharge to ticket prices in response.US President Donald Trump has repeatedly defended the conflict as necessary for peace and security long-term.However, Sir Richard said there was “no need” for the war. “The Iran conflict was completely unnecessary.…
Quantum computing company IonQ (IONQ +1.28%) hosts an investor day on Tuesday, Sept. 8. And I expect the event to produce something the company has never put in its guidance: a revenue forecast that reaches beyond the current year.Second-quarter revenue rose 287% year over year to about $80 million, the company’s fifth consecutive quarter of record results, up from about $65 million in the first quarter of this year. And management has raised its 2026 revenue guidance twice, from an initial range of $225 million to $245 million in February to $280 million to $290 million today. But every one of…
When it first happens to you, you think you’re crazy. You wander into a cafe and look at a menu with a variety of bagel sandwiches, but each illustration looks eerily flawless, precisely symmetrical, and oddly smooth, eliciting a visceral sensation that something isn’t right. You might think you’re paranoid, but you’re not losing your mind. Generative AI menus have hit the restaurant business courtesy of models trained on a narrow, “pleasing” aesthetic that feels wrong even when you can’t articulate why. Sometimes, these illustrations are egregiously fake, like a burrito with cheese so bubbly and melty that it looks…
