The leader of Britain’s trade unionists has told Andy Burnham the government should introduce a “social tariff”, paid for by a bank surcharge, to help low and middle earners with their energy bills.A social tariff is a discount on bills based on household income, and the TUC says it believes two-thirds of households could benefit. The TUC says the bank surcharge, which was reduced in 2023 from 8% to 3% by the then Conservative government, should be reversed – and estimates it would raise £9bn over four years.TUC leader Paul Nowak said: “I think it will appeal to the prime minister.…
In brief Trezor said its third-party email provider was breached and used to send phishing emails. The fake alert claimed an STM32 hardware flaw weakened recovery phrases on some Trezor devices. Security researchers said similar emails targeting BitBox users may point to a broader compromise of hardware-wallet email providers. Looking back at the past quarter-century, it becomes apparent that the 9/11 terrorist attack against the United States was not a transformative event. Far more important developments have intervened, not least America’s rejection of the postwar order that it had a large hand in building. NEW YORK—This week marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. For many Americans, 9/11 is a distant memory, or not a memory at all—approximately 40% of the US population was either born after the attacks or is too young to remember them.
Some EU countries, such as Poland, are using their expanded defense budgets to buy more foreign hardware. A better approach would be to foster a thriving innovation ecosystem which ensures that the technologies, institutions, and people that underpin a strong military benefit the civilian economy as well. WARSAW—Poland has led NATO in defense spending in relative terms for three consecutive years, with an annual budget of roughly zł200 billion ($54 billion), or 4.8% of GDP. Poland was also the first country to draw on the European Union’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) loan facility, securing some €43.7 billion ($50 billion)…
In developed economies, manufacturing employment will decline, regardless of industrial strategies pursued. China’s competitiveness means that any expectation that manufacturing will absorb more than a trivial fraction of the large increases in the working-age population still occurring in India or Africa is a delusion. LONDON—China’s huge trade surplus, now running at over $1 trillion per year, poses important macroeconomic and trade-policy issues, which were recently addressed in a valuable Project Syndicate compendium. But aside from short-term policy choices, it is also vital to understand the deeper implications of China’s manufacturing prowess for global trends in employment and relative prices.
