Investors often weigh established profitability against high-growth potential. Choosing between Booking (BKNG +1.68%) and Coupang (CPNG +3.26%) requires deciding whether you value travel market dominance or e-commerce expansion in Asia.

Booking operates a massive online travel platform, connecting millions of accommodation properties with travelers globally. Coupang serves as South Korea’s leading e-commerce provider, integrating logistics, food delivery, and streaming services. Comparing them helps clarify if your portfolio favors stable, high-margin travel services or the capital-intensive world of logistics and retail.

    The case for Booking

Booking operates a global online travel platform through brands such as Booking.com, Agoda, and OpenTable. The company connects consumers with roughly 4.7 million accommodation properties as of June 2026. It relies on third-party search platforms to drive traffic, a common trait among travel and tourism stocks.

Through the June 2026 quarter, trailing 12-month (TTM) revenue reached nearly $28 billion, representing approximately 13% year-over-year growth. The company reported net income of roughly $7 billion, which resulted in a net margin of 25%. This profitability follows a consistent trend of high-margin performance across its global operations.

The debt-to-equity ratio, which measures total debt relative to shareholders’ equity, is -1.9x, indicating the company has negative shareholders’ equity.

TTM free cash flow was roughly $9.5 billion, representing operating cash flow minus capital expenditures.

    The case for Coupang

Coupang is a diversified commerce and technology provider primarily serving customers in South Korea and Taiwan. The company offers retail delivery, food ordering via its Eats brand, and video streaming through its WOW membership program. It maintains a vast logistics network and recently expanded its reach by acquiring the luxury retail platform Farfetch.

TTM revenue reached nearly $35 billion, an increase of roughly 10% over the previous year. Net loss for the period was $767 million. While revenue growth remains robust, the net loss reflects the high costs of logistics and international expansion.

Coupang has a debt-to-equity ratio of 1.9x, which compares its total debt to its shareholders’ equity.

TTM free cash flow was roughly $84 million, representing operating cash flow minus capital expenditures.

    Risk profile comparison

Booking faces intense competition from global technology firms and AI-native agents offering direct booking features, which threatens its market share. Furthermore, the high development costs of integrating generative artificial intelligence (AI) into its Connected Trip strategy may impact short-term profitability.

Coupang is managing the aftermath of an unauthorized data access incident in late 2025 that led to class action litigation. Additionally, Coupang competes in a highly competitive e-commerce market.

    Valuation comparison

Booking carries a lower Forward P/E, which measures price against future earnings estimates, while Coupang has a lower P/S ratio based on sales over the past twelve months.

    Metric Booking Coupang
    Forward P/E 14.6x 43.5x
    P/S ratio 4.1x 0.7x

Valuation metrics include those sourced from Financial Modeling Prep (FMP) and may differ from those of other data providers.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

Bookings is facing competition from AI-driven leads for consumers when booking places to stay. In contrast, Coupang faces near-term headwinds from a recent data breach that disrupted consumer behavior on its platform and slowed revenue growth. Both stocks are likely to remain volatile heading into 2027, so I would rather buy the more distressed one, Coupang.

Coupang looks undervalued, trading at a low price-to-sales multiple of 0.7x on next year’s revenue estimate. Analysts are also expecting a sharp rebound in earnings as the company laps the data breach incident last year.

The fundamental metrics still show a healthy business. Customers are continuing to spend more on Coupang, while WOW memberships are now higher than before the incident.

Bookings could deliver good returns, as it also looks conservatively valued at a modest forward P/E. Investors will want to continue monitoring direct traffic to its marketplace and the growth in the number of listings available, as those will be indicators that it’s retaining a solid competitive position in travel bookings.

For now, I would rather buy Coupang, since it is heavily discounted over what appears to be a temporary blip in its growth trajectory.
